Dec 16 gangrape: Defence begins arguments before HC

After several delays, the defence arguments in the death sentence reference of the December 16 gangrape convicts began on Thursday.

A P Singh, counsel for convicts Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur, assailed the statements given by the 23-year-old paramedic student who was gangraped on December 16 last year, and her male friend, claiming that his clients were not involved in the incident.

Singh said according to statements of doctors in Safdarjung Hospital, the woman had informed the hospital staff that she had been gangraped “by two or three men”.

He said,“There was no mention of their names in the first dying declaration or in the FIR. Their names were added only after police arrested them.”

Arguing before the court of Justice Reva Khetrapal and Justice Pratibha Rani,Singh also said the woman had died before she was taken to Singapore, alleging that improper treatment at Safdarjung hospital was the cause of her death. The arguments by the defence are now expected to continue on Monday.
