An 80-year-old man was found dead at his residence in West Delhi on Wednesday morning. Though police suspect robbery as the motive behind the murder, considering that the house was ransacked, they have not ruled out other possibilities.
The victim,Vilayat Chand Setia, was found strangled in his three-storey house around 6 am in Ramesh Nagar,West Delhi. Setia stayed alone on the first floor while his eldest daughter,Suman, lived with her husband Rajesh Sodhi and children on the third floor. The ground floor was vacant, police said.
Suman served dinner to Setia at 9 pm on Tuesday. When Rajesh went down in the morning to serve tea to Setia,he found his body on the bed. The victim was strangled with a rope, which is used for drying clothes. The other end of the rope was tied to a table, and the house was ransacked, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) V Renganathan.
The victims family said Setia had been living in the house for years. Suman and her husband moved in after his wifes death in 2006. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.
There were signs of a struggle. The almirah and locker in another room were broken into. The goods in the rooms were scattered, and it is possible that some of the cash was taken away. We did not find papas gold chain and ring on his body in the morning, said Pawan Madan,Setias other son. The main door as well as the sliding door at the back were found tampered with,he added.
According to police,Setia was planning to bequeath his house to his daughters. He was planning on going to court tomorrow for registering his will, Renganathan said.
The property was jointly shared by Setia and his two brothers. The property has been divided into three portions. One of them was owned by my father-in-law,and the other two by his brothers. After my brother-in-law died,Papa wanted to transfer a portion of the plot to my wife,Ritu, and Suman, Madan said.
Setia and his brothers had differences in this regard,he added.
