CWG sports complex opens to DU students

Delhi University has opened the doors to world class sports facilities to its students by making available part of the University Sports Complex used for the Commonwealth Games on membership basis.

Delhi University has opened the doors to world class sports facilities to its students by making available part of the University Sports Complex used for the Commonwealth Games on membership basis. The sports complex was a venue for the Common Wealth Games’ Rugby Sevens competition.

It includes a multi-purpose hall with facilities for indoor sports as well as a rugby court,had been lying out of bounds to the University’s students since the events ended in 2010. Now,the multi-purpose hall alone will be made available to PG students as well as teachers and non-teaching staff.

“We’re yet to finalise the modalities of entry for undergraduate students. These should be finalised in another month. Putting in facilities to hold practice-sessions,coaching camps etc at the complex will also take more time,” said Professor Meera Sood,Secretary,Delhi University Sports Council. The sports Council of the University was drafting a Sports Policy for the University,which will be ready when the next session opens,the Secretary said,adding that committees had already been constituted to formulate the policy.

The future of the rugby field at the complex,which was meant to be converted to a cricket ground for use by the University post the Common Wealth games is still unclear. The conversion of the field into a cricket pitch is yet to begin as the handing over of the Sports complex to the University Sports Council was still in progress,Professor Sood said.

The Polo Ground in Vijaynagar near University North Campus is almost ready to be opened to students and will have facilities for Basketball and Lawn Tennis,Sood said

The sports council has set a membership fee of Rs. 250 for students and Rs. 500 for teaching and non-teaching staff per month to use the facilities at the multi-purpose hall. Facilities available to members include a gym,courts for Badminton,as well as Yoga and aerobics instruction.

The complex will remain open from seven to nine thirty in the morning and from four to seven in the evening. The timings will be extended depending on the response from students,sports Council officials said.
