Police on Friday arrested a couple for allegedly extorting money from an accountant by threatening to implicate him in a criminal case. The incident was reported from West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area, police said.
According to police, the woman befriended accountant Akshay Jain on Quikr.com. She reportedly contacted him, saying she needed a job as a private assistant. Even though Akshay did not appoint her, she kept in touch with him through emails and chat windows and developed a relationship with him, police officers said.
“She then started asking him for money on some pretext or the other. He gave her nearly Rs 1.25 lakh. After that, he tried to avoid her, but she kept trying to keep in touch with him. One day the woman sent him her pictures on WhatsApp and then called him to meet her. Her husband came into the picture then,” DCP (West) Pushpender Kumar said.
The husband and wife went to meet Akshay and threatened to implicate him.
“The couple extorted Rs 2 lakh from him. On three separate occasions, they took Rs 2 lakh, Rs 35,000 and again Rs 2 Lakh,” a police officer said.
During questioning, the couple confessed to the crime, police said. “They told police that in July, 2014, the woman got in touch with Akshay. That was when the couple started making plans to get money out of him. According to their plan, the woman started developing a relationship with Akshay and even sent him her pictures. They extorted nearly Rs 8 lakh from him,” an officer said.
