More than a week after the death of Janeshwar Sharma, industrialist Anil Nanda’s driver, the police have recreated the scene of the crime to ascertain “in a scientific way” if it was a murder or suicide.

Investigators said they recreated the scene of crime by using a dummy in a simulated room, but Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Virender Singh Chahal said,“We are investigating in a scientific manner and I cannot comment on bits of the investigation tactics used.”

The police said they have contacted the CCTV company to find out if the Nanda family had put in a complaint that their CCTV was not working. The Nandas had told the police that their CCTV camera could not record the events of June 9,when Janeshwar Sharma was allegedly set on fire, because of a technical glitch. With no witnesses in the case, the police were relying on the footage for clues.

The police are also intrigued by the fact that a petrol can allegedly used to douse the victim had its lid on. “If three men poured petrol and fled after immolating Sharma, why would they cover the can? We are probing the angle as a possibility,” a police officer said.

DCP Chahal said they were waiting for the handwriting expert’s report on the letter purportedly written by Janeshwar before he was murdered. Janeshwar had written that Nanda and his aides should be held responsible if anything were to happen to him.
