The Delhi Police recently purchased 168 new Chevrolet Taveras for its Police Control Room (PCR) van fleet but it now seems they are looking for another make after personnel using these vehicles found them uncomfortable.
Less space between the seats and the roof of the new vehicles – with interiors modified according to suggestions by the police administration makes them uncomfortable for those sitting in the rear, sources said.
A PCR official said,There are now five personnel in each PCR van. There is less space and whenever we have to go somewhere or carry any accident victims,it becomes a problem.
Most of our men have complained that they often hurt their heads while sitting in the back because of the modifications to the interiors, sources said. These PCR vans are also uncomfortable for victims and injured persons being taken to hospital.
A five-member committee headed by a Joint Commissioner of Police rank officer has been set up to select new vehicles. The Delhi Police plans to increase the number of PCR vans to 1,000 before the Commonwealth Games next year.
Sources said a letter of intent has already been sent to the Union Home Ministry for the purchase of additional vehicles ahead of the Games. They said PCR vans that are not in good condition will be replaced first,followed by old vans,in a phased manner. In a recent move,the police have started deputing women constables in most PCR vans.
As many as 45,398 injured persons 17,012 injured in road accidents and 28,386 in other incidents were taken to hospital by PCR staff last year.
