Theft in office of Delhi Police’s Joint Commissioner for Commonwealth Games inside colony campus

In a major embarrassment for the police department, computers containing security plans for next year’s Commonwealth Games have been stolen from the office of Delhi Police’s Joint Commissioner for the Games,J K Sharma.

The theft was discovered on Monday morning.

Sharma’s office is located inside the campus of a police residential colony. The Delhi Police’s fingerprint bureau is located next door to Sharma’s office, and the 7th battalion of the armed forces, also called the Commissioner Reserve Forces, which usually guard VIP movement in the Capital,is also stationed nearby.

Nearly 500 officers of the 7th battalion are posted here at any given time.

According to Sharma, his staff found five computer monitors and three CPUs missing when they opened office on Monday morning. “We have reported the matter to Malviya Nagar police station; their officers have visited the office,” Sharma said. He refused to speak further on the incident, saying it’s for the investigators to reveal more.

According to a senior officer, the computers stored important information concerning several Games projects and have details of security plans for the mega event. Police officials, though, are tightlipped about the extent of information leak.

Sharma also acts as an advisor to the Delhi government about security plans for next year’s Commonwealth Games.

The senior officer said prima facie it looks like the miscreants entered through the rear window — “the grill has been found broken.”

The officer also counted out the possibility of outsiders entering the office since “the office is located inside the police training college. It has to be an insider.”

But another police official said despite such heavy police presence, the campus is not really well-guarded,adding that the entry to the Commonwealth Games Joint Commissioner’s office as well as the residential campus is through the same gate. “There are more than 400 or 500 quarters in this campus,” the official said,“so it is very difficult to check each person entering the precincts.”
