Arterial roads to be blocked too,Delhi Police to deploy snipers on rooftops along US Presidents route
Commuters are going to have a tough time on November 7 and 8 with the Delhi Police planning to lock down both carriageways on all of US President Barack Obamas routes. Even arterial roads linked to his scheduled routes will be blocked several minutes before the presidents convoy is to pass.
As reported,President Obamas first stop in Delhi will be Humayuns Tomb around 3.30 pm on Sunday. His contingent of around 40 cars will be escorted by at least 20 vehicles of Delhi Polices security wing. After spending two hours at the Mughal monument,Obama will move to ITC Maurya, taking the main Chanakyapuri road to reach the hotel for a few hours of rest.
In the evening,Obama will head for dinner with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
On the second day of his visit,Obama will head for Rajghat. Later on Monday,he is scheduled to address a joint sitting of the Parliament. After the address he will return to the hotel and then head to the Rashtrapati Bhavan for the state banquet. Early on Tuesday,Obama will leave for Jakarta.
A senior Delhi Police official said,A traffic advisory will be issued before the visit and people will have to avoid the roads he is taking and choose alternative routes to reach their destinations.
The Delhi Police has deployed two battalions to guard the Ridge in front of ITC Maurya as well as all routes on the Presidents schedule. They will also deploy snipers on the rooftops of buildings along the route to thwart any bid to attack the convoy.
The liaison officers of the US Secret Service and FBI will be directly in touch with the Delhi Police Security Wing for any change in plans.
