CM shown model of new RTR flyover, formal approval next week

Plans to build a flyover parallel to the existing single-carriageway on Rao Tula Ram Marg,a key south Delhi link to the airport, will be formally cleared by the state cabinet.

Plans to build a flyover parallel to the existing single-carriageway on Rao Tula Ram Marg,a key south Delhi link to the airport, will be formally cleared by the state cabinet when it meets next week,PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said.

On Tuesday, the project was granted financial clearance after a model of the proposed flyover and an underpass at the nearby Benito Juarez Marg was shown to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at a meeting of the cabinet.

Construction of the parallel flyover is expected to decongest the stretch from IIT to the airport. The new three-lane flyover will commence from the existing Munirka flyover and run parallel to the RTR flyover before descending near Niryat Bhawan. The length of the flyover will be 2.2 km.

Minister Chauhan said: “The flyover construction cost will be Rs 206 crore while that of the BJ Marg underpass will be Rs 116 crore as it involves construction of a skywalk as well. We hope to give final clearance to the project at the cabinet meeting next week.’’

According to officials in the PWD,once the formal clearance comes, tenders will be floated to start work on the parallel flyover and the underpass.

The RTR Marg flyover has been the subject of considerable debate — and the reason for a traffic nightmare — ever since a handful of Palam Marg residents, whose bungalows face the road, opposed the takeover of a service lane outside their houses for the flyover project. The flyover was reduced to a single carriageway, resulting in a traffic bottleneck and daily chaos.

The PWD maintains that the width of the service lane outside these houses may have to be reduced for the parallel flyover. The Delhi Urban Art Commission cleared the flyover project on August 27 this year.

To decongest RTR Marg and Dhaula Kuan, traffic from the direction of the airport will be diverted to BJ Marg, not utilised earlier because there was no right turn for Moti Bagh and New Delhi. “We will construct an underpass on BJ Marg for traffic bound for Ring Road and San Martin Marg on the other side. The proposal also involves construction of a 590-m skywalk,” an official said.
