The Delhi government will provide licences to 155 more shops to operate round-the-clock as part of its plan to give a boost to the night-time economy.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal granted approval for the licences and has sent the file to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
So far, a total of 523 shops have been granted permission to operate throughout the day over the last two years. In 2022, applications for 313 establishments were approved and 55 more were given permission earlier this year.
The Indian Express had reported in April that most shops and establishments applying for licences to operate throughout the day were clothing stores, accessories outlets and e-commerce grocery delivery service Blinkit.
“By approving the 24×7 operations for a new batch of commercial applicants, the Delhi government aims to generate more job opportunities, safeguard the interests of workers, and contribute to the overall development of the local economy. This development is expected to have a positive impact on both businesses and consumers alike. The extended operational hours will also provide convenience to the residents of Delhi, who can now access essential goods and services round-the-clock,” a statement issued by the government said.
Rules in force previously put restrictions on hiring night-shift employees and imposed opening and closing times for commercial establishments. The applications for round-the-clock operations can be made online.
