Academics take a backseat,as students indulge in cultural activities,interactive sessions and orientation programmes.

It is not yet a week since the new academic session began at Delhi University (DU) and the classes are still to start in full-swing. But the atmosphere in the campus is nothing short of festive. Dressed in their best,new students are trying to make the right beginning. Even though they look a little lost as they throng the streets,their seniors seem eager to offer a helping hand. College buildings,meanwhile,are pasted with fliers and posters of society auditions and upcoming competitions.

On a sultry Monday afternoon,the loud beat of dhols led us to the central lawn of Hindu College,where members of the college’s street-theatre society,Ibtida,were introducing themselves. “College activities are now picking up with society orientations and registrations.

I love how student-centric north campus is. My professors are brilliant and listening to them makes you question your existing beliefs,” says Shrishti Kochar,first-year BA (Hons) Political Science student,at Hindu College.

While students of the youth organisation,Leaders of

Tomorrow,have erected kiosks promoting anti-drug and anti-ragging campaigns in numerous colleges,in several parts of the university,seniors are engaging in ‘ice-breaking’ sessions with the juniors.

Addressing four freshers in her college,Shilpi Singh,second year BA (Hons) Statistics student at Hindu College,stated,“We have a culture of engaging in a dialogue. When we were in first year,our seniors made sure we were acquainted with all of them. We are a class of 30 students and all are on Facebook. Now,we are thick with our own juniors.”

Located away from the university campus,the culturally active environment of Lady Shri Ram College is keeping its students occupied. “There are so many people with different viewpoints and backgrounds. The teachers are very involved in every activity and the seniors are also very helpful,” says

Namita and Lata,first-year students pursuing journalism at the college.

However,the laid back beginning has some students complaining. Sitting at the entrance gate of Ramjas College,B.SC (Hons) Physics student,Nidhi,ran us through her schedule,that has long time gaps between classes. She rues,“I travel from my home in Haryana to college everyday,but on most occasions classes either get cancelled or the teachers don’t turn up.

Moreover,the professors are not very cooperative in helping us figure out the schedule.”
