The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the authorities concerned to bring down the noise levels near the IGI Airport to the international standards “without any further delay”. Expressing displeasure over the fact that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) wanted two years to implement the directions regrading noise reduction,Justice S Muralidhar said noise mitigating measures had to be put in place in a definite time-bound manner. Stage for Games event collapses,worker hurt
A stage that was being constructed at the Commonwealth Games Building for a programme to give away the first ticket for the event came apart on Thursday afternoon,critically injuring a worker. Lieutenant-Governor Tejender Khanna is to be presented the first ticket on Friday. The worker,Shambu G Naik,was rushed to RML after the lighting system and the stage fell on him. The programme will take place as scheduled,the organisers said.

Goel wants quota for Delhi students

After demanding that preference be given to students from the Capital in Delhi University over those coming from outside,former Union minister and BJP all-India general secretary Vijay Goel on Thursday sought 85 per cent reservation in 18 government colleges for all students who cleared CBSE Class XII from Delhi. He has written a letter to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit listing his demand. P2

Sheila gives her nod,Badarpur plant to go gas
Doors will soon shut for National Thermal Power Corporation’s Badarpur thermal power plant with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit approving the replacement of the coal-based unit with a eco-friendly gas-based power generation plant. The new power plant will produce 2,000 MW instead of the present output of 600 MW. As per some estimates,the plant accounts for nearly half of the Capital’s power-driven air pollution,emitting 5 mega million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
