Capital Humour

What better way to commemorate 100 years of Delhi than with a few laughs? An ongoing theatre festival,Haasya Rang, aims to do just that — through dark humour, slapstick and a farce or two. “Comedy is always sidelined in mainstream theatre and never taken seriously. But let me tell you,it’s a very serious thing to make people laugh,” says National School of Drama graduate,Chittranjan Tripathy, who has directed the six plays. The festival began on March 13 and will be on till March 20.

If Taj Mahal ka Tender throws light on the country’s red tape culture,Capitol Express shows the lengths to which a person can go to climb up the social ladder. “In Ladi Nazariya,we touch upon one of the strongest means of protest in India — fast unto death. It’s a story about how a man falls in love with someone else’s wife and goes on a fast unto death to win her over,” says Tripathy,40.

The festival has been organised by Navras and Khilona Theatre groups in collaboration with Sahitya Kala Parishad.

Haasya Rang is on at Shri Ram Center today. It will be held at LTG on March 15,19,and 20. On March 17,it will be held at India Habitat Centre
