Within a week of unveiling two refurbished venues for the Commonwealth Games,Delhi is ready with another — Karni Singh Shooting Range. Constructed by Central Public Works Department (CPWD),the Range will be inaugurated on Sunday.

Spread over 72 acres,the Range has been divided into six parts — a 10-metre range,a 25-metre range,a 50-metre range,a final range,trap and skeet range and a new armoury building.

For the 10-metre shooting range,a centrally air-conditioned indoor facility with complete power back-up has been constructed.

A maximum of 500 spectators can be accommodated here. Two different grids will be providing electricity to ensure complete power back-up.

The 25-metre shooting range is an outdoor venue with only the seating area covered; the shooter though will have shade on his head. There will be 50 firing points for this range.

For the 50-metre competition, there will be 80 firing points. The maximum capacity is 500 here also. For the final competition, there will be a separate range with the capacity to seat 1,000 spectators.

The most impressive section, however,is the trap and skeet range.

“It is nothing short of an achievement that we have been able to complete the venue in 13 months. We have made sure maximum green cover is maintained. The venue has been constructed keeping in mind the guidelines of International Shooting Sports Federation,” B K Chugh,Director General (Works) CPWD,said.

The safety of spectators has also been kept in mind. “Separate access for spectators and players has been made. The seating is designed in a way that the number of chairs in a row does not exceed 20. A steel railing separates spectators from the filed of play area,” Chugh added.

The Range had been built in 1982 for the 9th Asian Games and named in the honour of Maharaja of Bikaner,Dr Karni Singh who had won the Arjuna award in 1961 for his shooting skills.
