When the boys were still in college in 2007-08, they were a rage. Everybody in Delhi University knew the five — Adhir Ghosh on the guitars, Aveleon Vaz on the drums, Steve Peter on the bass, Shiv Ahuja on the keyboards and Robin Mathew on the vocals — who jammed after classes in Kirori Mal College. Drum beats, guitar riffs and familiar tunes made Five8, their band, a crowd favourite.
And then one day, college got over but Five8 stuck around and released their debut EP in 2009. Almost half-a-decade later, the band is now back with a self-financed, full-length album titled Our Imaginarium, next month.
The nine-track album is a reflection of how they have matured over time, personally and professionally. “Once college was over, some of us studied music, others performed with various other bands.
We were exposed to other sounds and that’s why jazz, R&B, soul and drum influences have found a place in this album,” says Ghosh, 25. Moving away from the aggressive rock approach, Five8 swings it with a more groove-oriented, jazz-influenced dance music.
For instance, Flashback dwells on harmonies and has an ambient sound to it while A ballad to the city starts off softly, and incorporates the sax with tongue-in-cheek lyrics on Delhi. “Thematically, the EP and the album are the same. The music we write is still about what we see, hear and experience in the city,” says Ahuja, also a freelance photographer.
Those who are tuned into the indie scene in the city would relate to Five8 as family. They’re everywhere — when not performing, a member or two will always be at other gigs, be it Ahuja documenting moments from performances on his camera or Ghosh dancing.
Ahuja’s photograph from a trip to Arunanchal Pradesh is the album cover. Our Imaginarium will first be available for online purchase on iTunes and Oklisten. “We want to release the music first, make people listen to the record and then go on a tour,” says Ghosh.
