Bottom-placed teams hope for second wind

A little over a year after they were handed a one-year ban from the Ranji Trophy by the BCCI for refusing to play Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar.

A little over a year after they were handed a one-year ban from the Ranji Trophy by the BCCI for refusing to play Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar,Services will take on the same opponents at Delhi’s Harbaksh Stadium on Wednesday in a Group B Plate division match.

Services’s comeback season coincided with their transition phase as they introduced six fresh faces to their squad. However the results clearly have not backed their choices —- Services missed the first innings lead in their game against Kerala at home and then narrowly escaped defeat against Andhra in their second match.

The team though, will take pride from the performance of two of their latest inductees. Soumyaranjan Swain hit a century on debut, with an aggregate of 210 runs in three innings to bag a place in the top ten charts while Suraj Yadav has 13 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls in as many matches. “I am happy with the way I have performed. I have got the opportunity but I would be happier still if it would help the team,” said Yadav.

Over the next four days,Services will be hoping to complement these individual feats with collective contribution and redeem their campaign as they take on the perennial whipping boys of the group. J&K are languishing at the bottom with just 1 point while Services are a point and a place above them.

Services captain Yashpal Singh blamed their poor start to the season on their year-long lay-off. “After being out of four day cricket for so long we are bound to be quite rusty. We can only hope we improve as the season progresses
