Between the Sheets

When canvas ruled as a medium for art,it made the proposition of buying art a little more realistic for the masses.

When canvas ruled as a medium for art,it made the proposition of buying art a little more realistic for the masses. Now that paper is celebrated, sheets with brush strokes of nine artists have been framed and exhibited at Gallery Espace in an exhibition fittingly titled “Works on Paper,2012”.

“Paper is the starting point for artists and is an intimate medium that can give viewers a peep into their minds. The show also aims at busting the myth that paper works are not an investment or do not last for long,” says Renu Modi, director of the gallery. It was three months ago that Modi had approached the artists to cull out their works on paper. The result is a varied collection.

If Chitra Ganesh has protagonists battling varied concerns — from a woman seated in wonderment with her back stabbed with numerous daggers,to another one introspecting her past,Kerala-based KL Leon explores different stages of a plant’s life. Manisha Parekh delves deep into the human mind, depicting its different states on her graphite on fabriano paper. Adip Dutta places several objects within boxes in a single frame. There is no ostensible co-relation between them, but the images do not come across as random either.

“I’m a sculptor and in these drawings,I have magnified and given value to banal objects. I’ve placed them directly, the manner in which I would place them in a 3D sculpture,” says the Kolkata-based artist.

The exhibition is on at Gallery Espace,16,Community Centre,New Friends Colony, till May 27. Contact: 26326267
