Betting racket busted,two held

The Delhi Police claimed to have cracked another betting syndicate operating during the Sri Lanka-New Zealand match on Tuesday

The Delhi Police claimed to have cracked another betting syndicate operating during the Sri Lanka-New Zealand match onTuesday,with the arrest of two persons. This takes the total number of such rackets busted since the start of the World Cup to 15.

Police said the racket was unearthed in Sriniwaspuri. The accused have been identified as Virender Kumar (46) and Pushkar Raj (49).

Virender Singh Chahal,Additional Commissioner of Police (Southeast) said: “A constable was sent as a decoy customer and placed a bet on the match by paying Rs 500. The two were then arrested.” The total bets received by the accused from punters amount to more than Rs 2 lakh,he added.

The rates of the odds between the two teams originated from outside India and the bets were taken during the match.

“The rates keep fluctuating with the fall of wickets and the runs scored. Mobile phones are used to get the rates of the odds and for taking bets from punters,” Chahal said. Kumar and Raj were earlier involved in a lottery business in Sonepat.
