Arshad Warsi on his latest release and why he would like to do something other than comedy
Monikers are something that actor Arshad Warsi,42,is well-acquainted with. When Rajkumar Hiranis Munna Bhai MBBS released in 2003 he was referred to as Circuit, the kurta clad stubble sporting sidekick of Sanjay Dutt. Till six months after that movie released I was constantly being addressed as that. Thank god not many people call me by that name anymore, he says, with a cryptic smile, when we meet him at PVR cinemas,at the Select Citywalk Mall,Saket. Now,post the success of Abhishek Chaubeys Ishqiya,Warsi is trying to pull the curtains down on his character Babban, the charming goon from rural Uttar Pradesh.
For his latest film,Hum Tum Aur Ghost starring Boman Irani and Dia Mirza though,Warsi is juggling with multiple roles. Besides playing the lead,he has co-written the script and produced it as well. This is virgin ground for me. But I always had this over-riding desire to produce a film some day. So when I thought of the story and started penning it down,I realised I would be best suited to produce it, says Warsi, sipping on his cola drink. The film releases this Friday.
For Warsi, who started his career over a decade back in ABCLs maiden venture Tere Mere Sapne, recognition came rather late, only after he played the scrupulous cop in Seher. But the struggle did not end there. I was never offered meaty roles even after Seher. It was always small comic roles that came my way. Thankfully Munna Bhai… and Ishqiya happened. Roles like these are hard to come by and they stay on with you, he sighs.
Hum Tum Aur Ghost, says Warsi,is his attempt at following his dream, without thinking of consequences. In the film he plays a fashion photographer who has the ability to communicate with ghosts and help them deal with emotional problems. Irani plays one of the ghosts. I wanted this film to be a comedy, not a creepy ghost flick. But since I like comedies,it does not mean I will do every comic role that comes my way. The script needs to have substance, says Warsi, who is currently working on Golmaal 3 with Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor.
