What’s it about? In many ways,Farah Khan is a good choice for a chat show host. She loves the sound of her own voice, she’s witty, and she hangs out with famous people. So it’s easy to see why a show such as Tere Mere Beach Mein, would find financial backing (that of skincare brand Neutrogena,as the host reminds us before each break) and why people would tune in to watch it. Tere Mere,we are told,is loosely modelled on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The latter famously has its host doing her zany dance at the beginning of each episode; the host of the former is a famous dance choreographer. But the similarities don’t end there – both shows emphasise humour and all guests are required to join in the fun,be it skits or funny videos.

Also included,in a very Oprah touch,is a segment where Khan gives away cheques for a couple of lakhs to needy people. The first episode saw a devoted son receive a cheque of Rs 2 lakh so that he can get his mother treatment for Spondilitis. And oh,the ‘beach’ in the name is spelt the way it is because there’s some sand scattered around the sets.

Who’s in it? Khan hosts the show with confidence and aplomb, possibly because she’s already friends with most of her guests. As for the guests themselves, they’re mostly drawn from Khan’s own hometown – Bollywood— but there are occasional outsiders. So for every John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra, there’s a Vijender Singh thrown in for good measure.

What’s hot? As we’ve already stated,Khan is a powerful figure in the Hindi film industry and she gets all her famous friends to come and tell all. In a coup of sorts, she even got Salman Khan’s mother,Salma Khan,to share her feelings about her superstar son’s escapades and prison record. In an endearingly candid moment,Salman even reveals that his usually gentle mother still slaps him for minor misdemeanours, forgetting that he’s grown-up man,to which his mother chuckles and corrects,“You’re a grown-up boy.”

What’s not? While it’s free of Simi Garewal’s cloying sentimentality and Karan Johar’s simpers,Tere Mere has a long way to go before it can be considered a good watch. The sets claim to be casual but look a tad careless, with too many colours and the beach theme not really coming through. The secrets revealed by the stars, while entertaining, are not particularly earth-shattering or compelling. But the weakest link, ironically,is Khan. There’s no doubt that she has the confidence to carry off the show, but her voice and diction fail her. Her famous lisp apart, there’s an eardrum-shattering quality to her delivery which desperately needs to be ironed out.

Should you be watching it? If you get a star like Salman Khan on your very first episode,it’s only bound to get better. Keep watching if you love your stars.
