A group of Bajrang Dal workers allegedly forcibly stopped a canter, vandalised it, and put the traffic on hold for over two hours Monday night in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra after they suspected that it was carrying beef.

The Agra Police later said the driver was transporting the bones of animals auctioned by Bharatpur Municipal Corporation.

In a purported video of the traffic jam that surfaced on social media, several vehicles can be seen stopped at the Rambagh flyover cut on the highway.

Truck driver Danish said he was going to Saharanpur with three other companions carrying the bones of animals auctioned by Bharatpur Municipal Corporation. He said that as soon as he climbed the Bhagwan Talkies flyover at 8.30 pm Monday, some men riding a bike tried to stop him. “I started moving ahead. But as soon as I crossed Jawahar Bridge, Bajrang Dal workers stopped the vehicle,” said Danish.

Danish also said that a dozen workers arrived and started vandalising the canter. “We saved our lives by running towards the Rambagh Police Station,” he added.

He said that on Sunday, Bajrang Dal workers in the Refinery Police Station area of Mathura stopped the canter. “We were asked to leave only after the police reached the highway,” he added.

Anil Sharma, Bajrang Dal’s Rambagh district coordinator, said a foul smell was coming from the vehicle. “An attempt was made to stop it, but the driver increased the speed. The police were informed, but arrived an hour later. Angered by this, the workers protested,” said Sharma.

He said the workers sat on the road. “This led to a line of vehicles. Later, the police arrived, and the workers were forcibly removed. Some were also taken to the police station,” he added.

According to the Agra police, several videos of a canter allegedly carrying the cow meat had been posted on social media. “It was suspected that the canter was carrying beef, but it was full of animal bones. These were auctioned by Bharatpur Municipal Corporation. Those carrying it had all the necessary documents regarding it. The video is misleading, and action will be taken against those involved,” said Piyush Kant Rai, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chatta.
