Taking offence at an advertisement put out by the BJP, which alludes to Arvind Kejriwal as someone belonging to the upadravi (anarchist) gotra (clan), the AAP chief on Monday filed a complaint with the Election Commission on the issue.
The advertisement alludes to Kejriwal — depicted wearing a white cap and muffler and brandishing a broom — and says, “If you don’t listen to me, I will disrupt the programme and after one year, I will ask for a VIP pass.”
It further states that on one hand a chief minister sits on dharnas and claims to be an anarchist, and on the other, he threatens to disrupt the Republic Day programme. “Crores of citizens of the country consider Republic Day as their national holiday and are proud of it. And your upadravi gotra was ready to interrupt even this…,” the advertisement reads.

Kejriwal attacked the BJP for denigrating his entire community, the Aggrawals. “What has happened to the BJP? First, they targeted my children but I kept quiet. Annaji says one should have the strength to accept insult… In public service, I have never reacted to personal attacks. But today, the BJP crossed all limits with the advertisement,” Kejriwal said in a series of tweets.
“Today, the BJP called the entire Aggrawal community upadravi. They called my gotra anarchist. The BJP’s fight can be against me. How can they call the entire Aggrawal community anarchist?” Kejriwal said.
“The BJP has stooped to making casteist remarks. It should apologise to the entire Aggrawal community,” he said.
Meanwhile, AAP leaders questioned if the BJP had sought the EC’s permission before putting out the advertisement.
“According to rules, the EC has to approve any advertisement before it goes to print. We will ask the EC if they had seen the advertisement,” Yogendra Yadav said.
“There was lot of hue and cry when Arvind Kejriwal had called himself a baniya (trader clan). I want to see the reaction to this advertisement,” Yadav said.
AAP putting meaning to words for its benefit: BJP
After AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal complained to the Election Commission regarding a ‘personal attack’ in a BJP advertisement, a delegation of BJP leaders, led by Delhi chief Satish Upadhyay, filed a complaint with the EC, claiming that the AAP was violating the Model Code of Conduct by unnecessarily stretching and imputing meanings to the words for its benefit.
“The AAP has claimed that the BJP is trying to divide the society on caste lines. But the BJP treats all castes as equal and does not believe in caste politics. The word gotra was used as a metaphor in the advertisement. Upadravi gotra is used to say that he belongs to an anarchist clan — something he himself claims,” Upadhyay said.
