Two villages in Modinagar witnessed two wedding ceremonies turning sour on Sunday night,after the grooms and their families demanded dowry.
In both cases,members of the brides family held the groom and his relatives hostage till the police arrived.
The grooms were released only after police intervention.
Tikri Khurd village in Modinagar witnessed high drama when the grooms family demanded dowry after being offended,by the brides family.
Deepanjali,daughter of Rewati Sharan,was to get married to Vinod Singh,son of Atar Singh,a resident of Siddiqui Nagar,on Sunday night.
During the wedding,Vinods friends misbehaved with the bride,disrupting the ceremony.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) M M Baig said: Vinods friends wanted to get themselves photographed with Deepanjali. They kept their hands on her head and she objected to this. So did brides family members. But the grooms family took offence. To settle the matter,the grooms family demanded Rs 1 lakh more as dowry.
The incident took place after the marriage rituals were completed. The brides family then took the grooms family hostage. The police received information in the morning.
We have asked the brides family to give us a written complaint if they want us to take action against the groom and his family. Both the families are still discussing the matter, said a senior police officer.
Meanwhile,in Degmabad village of Modinagar,a bride refused to marry the groom as a dowry demand of Rs1 lakh and a car was made by the grooms family.
According to Om Prakash Sagar,father of the bride,they received the baraat of their daughter,Poonam,which had come from Partapur,Meerut.
When the rituals were about to begin,the grooms family asked for dowry. My daughter decided not to marry to greedy man. We supported her decision, said the father.
Sagars family too kept the family of Navratan Kumar,the groom,hostage till the police came. The two families reached a compromise and returned each others goods and parted,the police said.
