Kejriwal in letter to Bhagwat: Does RSS support BJP’s wrongdoings?

In his letter to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP of buying votes and getting voter names deleted. The BJP has urged Kejriwal to give up his ‘bad habits of lying and cheating’.

As political heat grips Delhi ahead of the Assembly elections due in February, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has written to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to ask if the RSS will seek votes for the BJP in the Capital, and whether it supports the party’s “wrongdoings”.  The letter prompted an attack from BJP which claimed that Kejriwal’s claims against the BJP reflect his “political frustration” and his “fear of losing the polls”.

“There are reports in the media that RSS will seek votes for the BJP in the Delhi elections. Is this true? Before this, people wanted to know whether RSS supports the party’s wrong activities in the recent past?” wrote Kejriwal in his letter dated December 30 as he hit out at BJP over the alleged tampering of electoral rolls and claimed that the party has been “buying votes to distribute money”.

“Efforts are being made on a large scale to cut the votes of the poor — Dalits, people from the eastern region, and slum dwellers — even though these people have been living here for many years. Does RSS think that doing this is right for Indian democracy… Don’t you think that the BJP is weakening Indian democracy in this way?” Kejriwal asked.

In response, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva took a potshot at Kejriwal as he urged him to take five resolutions. “Today, on the first day of New Year 2025, people of Delhi hope you will bring about meaningful change in yourself by giving up your bad habits of lying and cheating…On my request, you must take at least these five resolutions this year.  You will stop playing with the sentiments of women, elderly and religious people of Delhi by making false promises and you will apologise to the people of Delhi for promoting liquor in Delhi,” wrote Sachdeva in his letter to the AAP chief.  He also asked Kejriwal to “publicly apologise for the false promises” he made to clean Yamuna and the “corruption committed in the name of cleaning”.

“You will pledge not to meet or take donations from anti-national forces for political gain…I hope that by adopting these suggestions of mine, you will bring about meaningful improvement in your life by keeping away from lies and deceit…may god give you strength to follow the right path,” Sachdeva further wrote, adding that the letter reflected Kejriwal’s frustration and fear of losing the upcoming polls.

The AAP shot back at Sachdeva in a statement. “The BJP leaders don’t dare to question Amit Shah about why Delhi’s law and order has collapsed in the last two years. Why are three to four women raped daily in Delhi? Why isn’t this a priority? Instead, they spend their mornings and evenings abusing Arvind Kejriwal…They are rattled by his new guarantees — Rs 2,100 for every woman and Rs 18,000 per month for pujaris and granthis… Instead of abusing Kejriwal, BJP should implement AAP’s Delhi governance model in all 20 states where the BJP rules.”

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi lashed out at Kejriwal, saying: “Don’t write to the Sangh, learn from it. Learn the spirit of service… Leave behind your political moves.”

In a previous letter to the RSS chief in September, Kejriwal had targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, questioning the politics pursued by the party.
