With the tussle between the Centre and the AAP-led Delhi government over the MHA notification intensifying, members of the AAP said they were reaching out to members of other parties for support.

The move comes a day after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the Centre was treating “Delhi like an experiment” and that “if they didn’t come together, other states would be treated like Delhi”.

On Thursday, the Delhi Assembly had passed a resolution terming the MHA notification that gave the L-G sway over services “unconstitutional”.  Senior party leaders said efforts were on to contact other non-BJP parties to build a consensus.

Senior party leaders said the Kejriwal would soon write to chief ministers of non-BJP ruled states about standing together in Parliament.
“Kejriwal will write to Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, and Nitish Kumar and appraise them of the Centre’s interference in state matters. The issue of the violation of federal principles is a serious matter. The letters should be sent in the next few days,” a senior leader said.

AAP leaders said they were also getting in touch with parliamentarians to discuss how Parliament was bypassed in
the issuance of the MHA notification.

“We will be sending them copies of the legal advice given to us by noted jurists like Gopal Subramanium, K K Venugopal, Rajeev Dhawan and Indira Jaising. These notes point out that the notification tried to bring a change to the Constitution merely by passing an executive order. This impinges on the rights of Parliament as only it can amend the Constitution. We want Members of Parliament also to raise this issue,” the leader said.

On Wednesday, Kejriwal had said he would reach out to non-BJP leaders and warn them that Delhi would only be a “start”.
