Two students beaten up in school
NEW DELHI: Two students were injured in separate cases of corporal punishment at schools across the city. In the first incident,a public school principal allegedly beat up a Class I student for skipping classes causing head injuries. Police said 5-year-old Sanjogs head was allegedly slammed against the wall by Balveen Khandelwal,principal of Bright Land Public School in Shastri Nagar,on Saturday. Sanjogs father,a trader,was told over the phone that his son had fallen from the school stairs. However,Sanjogs classmates informed him that he was beaten up by the principal, sources said. Sanjog was taken to MMG Hospital. In another incident,Tarun,a Class IV student,was allegedly beaten up by his teacher at a government primary school near Modinagar after he didnt come to school in the proper uniform. The matter was reported to Basic Shikchha Adhikari.
DU teachers observe first day of strike
NEW DELHI: Delhi University teachers observed the first of a two-day strike launched by DUTA (Delhi University Teachers Association) on Monday. The move was aimed at protesting the imposition of the semester system at the undergraduate level. The strike kicks off a series of protests,which will culminate with a DUTA general body meeting and a march to the Vice Chancellors office on August 31,the day VC Deepak Pental completes five years in office. Programmes include a symposium on the semester system on Wednesday,followed by dharnas on Thursday,Friday and next Monday. It is evident that colleges are not willing to accept the illegal and officious orders issued by him to teach 13 semester-based undergraduate science courses, said DUTA president Aditya Narayan Misra.
Nepalese woman held for human trafficking
NEW DELHI: A Nepalese woman was arrested in the Capital for allegedly trafficking girls to Kuwait by using forged documents. The accused,Kavita,was arrested by the police from her hideout on Saturday,DCP (IGI Airport) O P Mishra said. The authorities first got to know of the racket after the Immigration department at the airport came across two girls with doctored passports on August 19. The girls were interrogated and Kavitas role came to light. Kavita said she got into human-trafficking after coming into contact with a job placement agency in Kuwait. Her modus operandi was to substitute photos pasted on original passports belonging to someone else with pictures of the persons being trafficked. She has been running this racket along with two other associates from Delhi as well Nepal, Mishra said. Kavita would charge Rs 50,000 from each trafficked person,police said.
No sympathy for rent defaulters: HC
NEW DELHI: No sympathy can be shown to a tenant who is a habitual defaulter in paying rent,the Delhi High Court said while ordering a businessman to vacate an NDMC premises. Every licensee or allotee and even an unauthorised occupant is obliged to pay the monthly license fee so long as he is using the premises, said the court in a recent judgment. The court was hearing a petition by Vijay Kumar who had challenged the NDMCs decision to regularise his allotment under its 1997 policy and the eviction order passed by the Estate Officer for habitually defaulting on paying rent.
Woman seeks action against husband
Ghaziabad: A 21-year-old woman approached the Noida police on Monday after her husband filed a filed a case against her in local court claiming she is a eunuch. The woman claimed her husband was trying to malign her after her family refused to give in to his dowry demands. Armed with her medical reports,the woman met Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Raghubir Lal. The woman said she was married on February 15 but returned to her parents home after 10 days as her husband and in-laws beat her up and demanded Rs 2 lakh. The medical reports shows her to be normal. We will send her for a full medical check up on Tuesday, said Lal.
Cop injured in Nangloi encounter
NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police constable was injured after during a brief encounter with a criminal in Nangloi area of west district on Sunday night. The police said a special team of Crime Branch had gone to the area to apprehend Virender alias Chota,a criminal involved in robberies in Delhi and NCR. Virender,convicted by a Haryana court,jumped parole in 2008 and had been committing crimes in Delhi and NCR, a senior police officer said. Virender arrived in an Indica car with his associate. But he sensed he had been trapped and opened fire, a senior police officer said. A bullet hit a constable Ajay Kumar in the leg. Virender was later apprehended while his associate escaped. A country-made pistol was confiscated from his possession.

New Delhi: Women can enjoy free travel in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses On Tuesday on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has announced. Free travel will not be allowed in AC buses.
Jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh robbed
NEW DELHI: Jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh was robbed at gunpoint from a showroom by unidentified assailants in Mayapuri area of West Delhi on Sunday night. The police said the owner of the shop,Shri Ram,his son and a worker present when eight assailants entered the shop and held Akbar hostage. They looted gold and jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh, the police said.
Snag causes 6-hr cut in Vasant Kunj
NEW DELHI: Residents of B-5 and B-6 in Vasant Kunj experienced powercuts lasting around 6 hours on Monday afternoon. According to BSES officials,the snag occurred due to moisture that seeped into the panels of the sub-stations. It took us about five hours to fix it. This is nothing unusual and happens across the world, a local official said. The power was restored around 8.30 pm.
