Man dies as room catches fire
A 25-year-old man died after the room he was sitting in caught fire. The incident was reported from Malviya Nagar,South Delhi,at 11 pm on Tuesday night. The victim,Kapil,was reportedly smoking a cigarette. Kerosene oil was also stored in the room and it caught fire from the cigarette ashes, a senior police officer said. Kapils father,Ram Bahadur is a head constable with the Delhi Police and is posted at Mongolpuri police station.
Minor fire in Palika Bazaar
A minor fire broke out at a saree showroom at the busy Palika Bazaar in Connaught Place on Wednesday morning. According to the police,the blaze was reported from the shop near Gate No 2 of the market around 10 am. Three fire tenders were sent to the spot. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
Members of a gang of auto-lifters escaped after opening fire at the police personnel in Najafgarh,Outer Delhi,at 11 pm on Wednesday. According to the police,the Anti-Auto Theft Squad had laid a trap in the Metro depot area after they received a tip-off. When the auto-lifters were asked to surrender,they opened fire. In retaliation,the policemen also counter-fired, a police officer said. Though the cops tried to nab them,they escaped in the car in which they had come.
Traffic Police to partner Jeevan Project
The Delhi Traffic Police recently expressed interest in becoming a partner of the Delhi governments Jeevan Project electronic kiosks providing a single-window facility for various services pertaining to different departments and ministries in the Capital. With this,residents can pay the traffic challans at the Jeevan kiosks. We are working out the modalities, a senior police officer said.
Electronic registration of shops
The Delhi government on Wednesday launched a special service of e-registration of shops under Delhi Shops and Establishment Act 1954 through Jeevan Centre. The shops and establishment who refuse to register under the Act will be penalised.
Humayuns Tomb wins award
Humayuns Tomb was awarded the Best Maintained Tourist-Friendly Monument at the annual National Tourism Awards 2008-2009 held by the Ministry of Tourism on Wednesday. The monument usually overshadowed by the Red Fort and Qutub Minar received the award for the first time. The award was shared by Bhima Devi Temple in Pinjore,which is under the Haryana Tourism Corporation Limited.
Baba Kharak Singh Marg opens for traffic
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has opened Baba Kharak Singh Marg a section of which was closed for the construction of the Airport Express Metro line for traffic. With the completion of the underground tunnel construction,the Delhi Metro has also constructed a newly laid road with two lanes available for traffic on both the sides at Baba Kharak Singh Marg.
Plan to extend Metro to Sec-62 in Noida
Noida/Greater Noida: After the success of Metro in Noida,the Noida and Greater Noida Authority officials have decided to extend the Metro route to Sector-62 of Noida. Currently,the Metro begins at Sector -15 in Noida and culminates at Sector-32. We have not decided on the number of stations and other details, Chairman and CEO of Noida Authority Mohinder Singh said.
Schoolgirl hit by SUV still critical
NOIDA: A Class VII student of Aster Public School in Greater Noida,who was hit by an SUV allegedly being driven by a minor,was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of Kailash Hospital in Noida from the hospitals Greater Noida branch on Wednesday evening. The accident took place on Friday when the victim,Manisha Pal,was returning home from school. No case has been registered yet.
Phones at Tihar: Home Secy summoned
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday summoned the Home Secretary of the Delhi government for failing to provide telephone facilities to Tihar Jail inmates despite an earlier order on November 11. The court has summoned the Home Secretary on March 18.
HC nod sought for runway use at night
The Delhi International Airport Ltd sought approval from the Delhi High Court on Wednesday for using runway 29-11 for aircraft landing at nights,saying runway 28 needs repairs that will take at least five months. The court asked the petitioners a Vasant Kunj-based hospital and a residential area to file a rejoinder to the affidavit submitted by the respondents and fixed the matter before a single judge bench on March 22.
