CAG should check discom accounts,says power panel
With the government indicating that there will be no change in power tariffs in the current financial year,the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has recommended that the government get the accounts of all three discoms audited by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. The DERC had earlier told the government that the discoms have “lied completely”,and misrepresented their financial position to the government. “The government is aware that there have been several controversies with respect to the correctness of the accounts of the three private discoms in Delhi… It is best to get the matter settled… with an audit by CAG,” a letter sent by the DERC to the government said.

Agents held for cheating woman of Rs 23.78 lakh
Jalandhar: Two Delhi-based travel agents,who duped a Jalandar based woman to the tune of Rs 23.78 lakh,were arrested by Punjab Police in Delhi on Thursday. The two have been identified as Jagpreet Singh alias Jaspreet Singh alias Jimmi and Amanpreet Singh,both sons of one Kartar Singh Arora,a resident of Hari Nagar. They are accused of cheating Kuldeep Kaur of village Sohal Jagir of Rs 23.78 lakh on the pretext of sending her two sons abroad on study visa.

Four arrested for selling elephant tusks
The Central district police has arrested four persons on Wednesday for selling elephant tusks. The possession and selling of elephant tusk is prohibited under the provisions of Wild Life Act 1972. Officials claimed the tusk,around six kilograms,was smuggled from Nazibabad in Uttar Pradesh and has a market value of Rs 2.5-3 lakh. The accused were identified as Dinesh Gupta (38),Mahender Singh (38),Braham Singh (56) and Rashid Malik (21). A case has been registered at the Daryaganj police station.

Home Guard among two held for extortion calls
The East Delhi police have arrested two persons,one of whom is a Home Guard in Uttar Pradesh,for making extortion calls to a businessman demanding Rs 25 lakh as protection money. The two accused were identified as Shadab Ahmad Khan and Furkan Ali. One Sanjeev Rathore,a financier and businessman in Krishna Nagar,had reported he had received extortion calls thrice in the past two months.

Snag causes power cuts in Lutyens’ Delhi
Several areas in Lutyens’ Delhi faced power cuts on Thursday afternoon due to a glitch in the areas’ transmission network. A gas turbine station,which supplies power to the areas,developed a technical snag. The problem began at 3 pm,and affected areas like Parliament Street,Lodhi Colony,South Avenue,North Avenue,Chanakyapuri and Connaught Place.

Two booked under MCOCA for cheating
The Special Cell has arrested two cheats,including one with a B Tech degree from th London School of Technology,and booked them under the Maharastra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on Wednesday. The accused,Arshad Alam (33) and Bhupender Singh alias Sidhu (38),were allegedly involved in several cases of cheating and an illegal immigration racket,said the police. Ten Indian passports including 2 passports containing fake Visas of New Zealand,one laptop and a colour printer used for preparing forged visas and other forged travel documents have been recovered.

Mechanic found dead,suicide suspected
A motor mechanic was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Rohini Sector 26 on Thursday morning. Amod Kumar (28),a native of Kanpur,was working as a mechanic in a garage in Rohini. His body was found in the bathroom of the house of one Ram Narain. The police said there were strangulation marks on his neck. The police suspect the deceased committed suicide.
