Pay new road tax from today
The Delhi government will notify the Cabinet decision to increase road tax on them to generate additional revenue on Wednesday. The new rates will be effective across the Capital. People buying two-wheelers costing up to Rs 25,000 will have to pay the existing rate of two per cent while two-wheelers in the price range of Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 will attract a road tax of four per cent. Two-wheelers exceeding Rs 40,000 will be charged six per cent road tax,the official said. For cars costing up to Rs 6 lakh,the tax has been doubled to four per cent from existing two per cent,while the cars in the price band of Rs 6 lakh and Rs 10 lakh will attract seven per cent road tax. Ten per cent road tax will be levied on cars costing above Rs 10 lakh,the official said.
Accused in 50 car stereo robberies arrested
A 30-year-old man allegedly involved in at least 50 cases of stealing stereos from cars was arrested in the Capital after he opened fire at police personnel,the police said on Tuesday. Ishtiyak,a resident of Ghaziabad,was apprehended when he came to the Asian Games Village in South Delhi on Monday. He opened fire at the police party when they tried to arrest him. No one was hurt. Before he could reload his countrymade pistol,he was apprehended, a senior police officer said.
Son of Intelligence Bureau official hangs self
A 14-year-old boy reportedly committed suicide at his residence at F-Block Lado Sarai,South Delhi,on Tuesday afternoon. The police said the boy was the son of an Intelligence Bureau official. According to the police,the boys mother had scolded him on Tuesday,after which he went to his room and hanged himself from the ceiling fan with a dupatta. (His mother) rushed the boy to Max Hospital in Saket,where he was declared brought dead. Max Hospital management called the police at 2 pm, a senior police officer said. No suicide note has been recovered from the room.
Rs 1.50 cheating: HC upholds dismissal
Integrity of a workman is more important than any sum of money, the Delhi High Court observed as it upheld the dismissal of a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) conductor who misappropriated Rs 1.50. Dalbir Singh was dismissed from service after checking staff found on March 24,1989,that three passengers were issued tickets of Re 1 denomination each instead of Rs 1.50,though they had paid full fare of Rs 4.50 for the tickets. While he challenged the order of the department and an Industrial Tribunal in the High Court,Justice Rajiv Sahi Endlaw dismissed Singhs petition saying the facts of the case had clearly established that Singh was dishonest in his job and was not performing his duty as expected.
Hoax call threatens to blow up Jama Masjid
An anonymous call threatening to blow up the historic Jama Masjid in Central Delhi created panic on Tuesday evening but it later turned to be hoax. The call was received at the Police Control Room at around 8 pm and bomb disposal teams and dog squads were rushed to the spot. After extensive searches,a senior police officers said the call was a hoax. The call was made from a mobile number and it is being traced,the police said.
