Youth stabbed for resisting snatchers
GHAZIABAD: Neeraj Kumar,a 27-year-old furniture shop owner from Shalimar Bagh,was stabbed to death when he resisted an attempt to snatch his mobile phone at the Pitampura District Park. Kumar was with a female friend when the gang of boys tried to snatch his phone,said a police official. After stabbing Kumar,the gang took his phone and fled.

MCD: Will persuade tongawallahs to quit
NEW DELHI: As the time-frame set for phasing out of tongas from the Walled City expired,the MCD on Sunday said it will persuade horse carriage owners to voluntarily stop operating. “There was no court stay on the phase-out and rehabilitation project. However,we are taking a humanitarian approach and trying to persuade the tongawallahs to voluntarily stop operating. We are not for a crackdown on them just now,” an MCD spokesperson said. The civic body had earlier said it will not renew the licences of tongawallas that expired on May 31

Man held from Haryana for raping five-year-old
NEW DELHI: The police have arrested man for raping a five-year-old girl on the stairs of a railway colony in Pul Prahladpur two days ago. The suspect,Jugnu,was arrested from Haryana’s Bahadurgarh on Saturday. A case has been registered.

Car catches fire,driver safe
NEW DELHI: A car caught fire on the Ring Road in South Delhi on Saturday night. Police officials said when the car (Maruti Esteem) was in front of the Safdarjung Hospital,the driver noticed smoke coming out from the bonnet. He stopped the car and got out. The car,however,was completely gutted by the time a fire tender reached the spot. The police suspect a short-circuit in the car’s air conditioner as the cause of fire.

Four injured as wall collapses
NEW DELHI: Four members of a family were injured when the wall of their neighbour’s house fell on them. The police said the incident was reported from Sangam Vihar,Southeast Delhi on Saturday night. According to the police,the wall fell due to strong winds. The injured have been identified as Mubarak Ali,30,his wife Salma,25 and their children. The police said the collapsed wall belongs to one VB Gaur. His house had been demolished about three months back by the MCD and only the wall was remaining.

Labourers hurt as truck turns turtle
NEW DELHI: A concrete mixer truck turned turtle in Northeast Delhi,injuring two labourers who were travelling on the truck on Sunday afternoon. The incident took place in New Usmanpur area at 12.30 pm. The police said the truck was on way to the construction site of a loop road of the Signature Bridge. The driver,Shyam Singh,and his helper,Anil Kumar,managed to get out from under the overturned truck,while labourers Manjun and Rakesh were trapped inside.

MCD plans to buy more fogging machines
New Delhi: To combat vector-borne diseases ahead of the Commonwealth Games,the MCD is planning to procure 14 vehicle-mounted fogging machines to prevent breeding of mosquitoes in the city. The civic body is also planning to purchase 247 hand-held pulse jet type thermal fogging machines at a total cost of Rs 1.78 crore through HLL.
