Prof Geelani gets bail in perjury case
A Delhi court on Wednesday granted bail to Prof S A R Geelani,acquitted in the 2002 Parliament attack case,after he was booked on charges of giving false evidence in a judicial proceeding. The complaint had been filed by Additional Sessions Judge Nivedita Anil Sharma,with whom Geelani had a heated argument a week ago. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja allowed Geelanis bail plea on a personal bond and a surety of Rs 20,000 each. The ASJ had ordered perjury proceedings against Geelani for allegedly giving a wrong address while standing surety for Mirza Iftikhar,who was acquitted in the 1996 Lajpat Nagar bombing case,in a case of in-prison fighting. Geelani,however,said the address is right and belongs to his wife. The judge is harassing me because of the argument I had with her after she rejected Iftikhars bail bond, he said.
Man held with narcotics in judicial custody
A Delhi court on Wednesday sent Lee Weiqi,a resident of Singapore,who had been arrested from the IGI Airport for allegedly carrying seven kilograms of hashish,to 14 days judicial custody. The Narcotics Control Bureau had submitted that they did not need to interrogate him in custody. Weiqi was arrested on May 2.
Two get 10 years in jail for carrying charas
Two persons were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for carrying over 240 kilograms of charas by a Delhi court. A penalty of Rs 2 lakh each was also imposed on them by the court. Triloki Singh and Ashok Kumar,the two accused in the case,were held guilty under various provisions of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Custodial death: Tihar jail chief summoned
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday summoned a Tihar Jail superintendent over the alleged custodial death of a murder convict. The court also sought an explanation on how the CCTV camera footage related to the incident was erased from the records. Sunder,a murder convict,died while in judicial custody during a fight among inmates on February 2.
Vendor loses life in fight over tomato
A vegetable vendor,Dharmendar,30,was allegedly stabbed to death by three men after he asked them to pay for a tomato the trio had eaten from his kiosk in Dabri area,Southwest Delhi. At 11 pm on Tuesday,the accused Pankaj,Babu and another unidentified man picked up a tomato from Dharmendars kiosk,the police said. When Dharmendar asked them to pay for it,the trio allegedly stabbed him, the police added. Pankaj and Babu have been arrested and case has been registered.
