Seyed E Hasnain leads in race for top job at JNU

New Delhi: Hyderabad University Vice-Chancellor Seyed E Hasnain is the leading contender for the position of Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor,sources in the selection panel said on Tuesday. Hasnain has been the frontrunner for the job from the start of the selection process. Also in the reckoning are JNU’s own faculty members Prof Jayati Ghosh from the Centre for Economics Studies & Planning,Prof Zoya Hassan,who teaches political science,Prof Rupa Manjari Ghosh from the School of Physical Sciences,Prof Rajendra Prasad from the School of Life Sciences,and Sanjay Puri,also from the School of Physical Sciences. Apart from them,Delhi University V-C Prof Deepak Pental also figures among the shortlisted candidates.

Free dental check-up for dogs

New Delhi: The Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre will offer free dental check-up for dogs every Tuesday. The facility,which has a dental cleaning machine for animals and a trained dental veterinarian,also offers services such as teeth polishing and removal of heavy tartar deposits. Principal Secretary appointed HC judge

New Delhi: Principal Secretary (Law and Justice) M L Mehta has been appointed as a High Court judge after a stint in the state government,which lasted for over a year. Mehta,who joined the government as the head of the Law Department in June 2009 after serving four months as a district judge (north),is credited with revolutionalising the alternative dispute redressal mechanism for effecting speedy justice. The system,which Mehta helped implement on the ground,offers entities languishing under judicial delays an alternative forum to negotiate for justice. In his 33 years of service in the judiciary,he oversaw the setting up of eight alternative dispute redressal centres across the Capital.

Three arrested for making guns

Ghaziabad: The Ghaziabad police arrested three persons while they were manufacturing countrymade pistols in a house at Sara village,sources said on Tuesday. The guns were allegedly being sold in neighbouring states. According to Superintendent of Police (Rural) M M Baig,Niwari station house officer K K Rana and his team were checking vehicles when they were tipped off about the racket. Iron chunks,gun parts and 12 fully-manufactured pistols were seized from the three accused — Abdul Kalam,Mohassalin and Zahiruddin.

Now,post-paid cabs from IGI Airport

New Delhi: The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Tuesday announced the availability of post-paid cabs from Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. With this,a passenger would now be able to walk out of the terminal and board a taxi without having to wait in a queue. Payments can also be done through credit or debit cards upon reaching the destination,DIAL said,adding that all bills would be electronically printed with the aid of tamper-proof meters.
