The Officers’ Association of AIIMS has extended its support to the scientists who are protesting against the administration’s proposal to cap the number of years one can be employed in projects at the premier medical institute. The protesting scientists are all either working in research projects or pursuing PhD at AIIMS.

The proposed guidelines issued by the AIIMS administration has limited the number of projects a researcher can take up to three, leading to an immediate termination of around 1,400 employees, including researchers and technical staff employed in various projects at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Officers’ Association of AIIMS is a group of employees involved in the administrative work of the institute.

The officers’ association in a letter to Director Dr M Srinivas said that it stands against the dismissal of contractual research project staff on a short notice.

“In reference to the letter received by the Society of Young Scientist in context of the proposed revisions regarding project staff recruitment guidelines, we support them in their stand against the dismissal of contractual research project staff on a short notice,” the letter said.

The letter further added that the staff has given their undaunting efforts and life’s important years to the research in AIMS and with the new directives proposing the cap of three years of project employee with no clause specifying its prospective implementation has left them in a state of shock.

It also urged the AIIMS administration to revisit the guidelines, proposed the revocation of the current memorandum of the research section to hold recruitment until then and suggested that the new guidelines should be implemented prospectively (for new employees only).

“We, the Officers Association, request you on human grounds to revisit the guidelines until then we propose to revoke the current memorandum of the Research Section to hold recruitment, new Guidelines should be implemented prospectively i.e. implemented for new employees only, age relaxation should be given to all working research staff. Meanwhile, the contractual research project staff shall be allowed until the new guidelines are framed and the fear the staff is undergoing should be handled sympathetically. Looking forward towards an inclusive humanistic approach,” the association has said in its demand supporting the research staff.
