AIIMS doctor dies by suicide at home

Raj Ghoniya, a resident of Rajkot in Gujarat, died due to a suspected overdose as used vials of medicines and syringes were found in his house in the Gautam Nagar area, police said.

A 34-year-old neurosurgeon at AIIMS was found dead at his house in South Delhi’s Gautam Nagar on Sunday afternoon, said police.

Said DCP (South) Ankit Kumar, “A PCR call was received at 2 pm at Hauz Khas Police Station regarding suicide by a doctor in Gautam Nagar. On receiving the call, police reached the spot where Dr Raj Ghoniya, 34, was found.” He was taken to AIIMS where he was declared dead.

In a suicide note recovered from his house, he did not blame anyone, said police, adding that some syringes and vials of medicine were also recovered from the house.

The doctor who died by suicide had completed his Masters in neurosurgery last year and was working at Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre in AIIMS.

One of his former colleagues said he was “very sincere” and “dedicated towards patient care”. “He wanted to work in AIIMS for a long time, and was a very bright doctor. He was respected among his peers,” he added. “He was very disciplined,” said a hospital employee who worked alongside him.
