Some flinched and some were taken aback,while many others took pleasure in the explicitness of it all. What lay ahead pinned onto the walls,were generous-sized adult movie posters with bizarre titles and erotic visuals. The Morning Show,curated by V Sunil,executive creative director of Wieden + Kennedy,opened up to an eager crowd last Friday at the W+K Exp in Sheikh Sarai. Posters of 18 cult adult movies have been put on display,out of the 43-odd that Sunil has collected in the last eight years or so.
Normally,all adult movie shows used to start at 10-10:30am. So,if it was a morning show,you knew it was shady, he said at the opening,adding,Lot of schoolchildren would go in at that time. Hence,this show is also called Morning Show.
The posters were outstanding originals in vibrant water colours,very real. Sunil said he had sourced them from various printers and producers in Mumbai. Plucked from the late Eighties and early Nineties,the posters have an aesthetic sense of their own: a bold visual language and a taboo subject. I thought I should do something before this genre becomes irrelevant. In the last decade,Bollywood has been celebrated a lot in terms of its art and fashion. But youngsters dont know much about this particular culture. I thought this was the best time to show it, he said.
So far,hes received rave reviews. People from the art world are very excited. Many have told me that it is an interesting subject to showcase, says Sunil.
The show is on till September 17,11 am-6 pm,at W+K Exp,Sheikh Sarai Phase-I
