AC fails to take off at new airport terminal

Facing a huge water crisis, the air-conditioning system at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport’s new terminal,1D,is failing to cope up with the increase in temperature despite an extensive four-month-long operational readiness. “It will take at least one week for the air-conditioning system (at the new terminal) to set its temperature,” an airport source said.

The new terminal was opened to domestic air traffic on Sunday.

Airport officials said the air-conditioning will take a week to settle in keeping with the rush of passengers and the rising mercury levels. The officials said the trial sessions were conducted with mock passengers and could not, therefore, gauge the rising heat and increase in passenger movement.

Officials said the IGI Airport is going through a major water crisis for the past few days. “The contractors who give us bottled water have refused to supply for some reason that we don’t know of,” an IGI official said. “It has made life difficult not only for the passengers but also for the staff.”

The airport went through a transfer programme to ensure a smooth transfer of operations at the new terminal.
