A Sindhi Story

Adding yet another milestone to Sindhi culture’s theatre scene is the two-day Sindhi Drama Festival at Shri Ram Centre for Art and Culture. The fest saw actor and critic Manohar Khushalani (you saw him in Madras Cafe) directing the Sindhi version of French playwright Moliere’s The Impostures of Scapin on the first day of the festival. Titled Vichoo, the plots follows the life of Vadhumal,a pompous and crafty man who constantly tricks people to get ahead.

Today, the second day of the festival,Prakash Bhatia,a Yatrik veteran,is directing the Sindhi version of Vijay Tendulkar’s Jaat Hi Poocho Sadhu Ki.Translated from Marathi by Bhatia’s wife Asha,Muhinji Zaathas will be staged for the first time. In this,Gokul, who managed to get a third division in his MA degree, dreams of adding a ‘Professor’ to his name before he dies. He’s love struck but caste differences get in the way. “The play,” says Bhatia,“is a comedy riddled with twists and turns. The simplicity of Tendulkar’s plots is what makes the production special.”

Watch Muhinji Zaathas at Shri Ram Center at 6:30 pm today. Contact 23862848 for passes.
