The Loomba Trust,a United Nations-accredited global charity that supports widows and their children, announced their new brand ambassador — Bollywood actress Preity Zinta — at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club in the Capital. Trust president Cherie Blair was also present.

Zinta said,“I am honoured to be associated with this trust.”

About adversities faced by women in rural parts of the country, she said,“When a woman loses her husband, she loses all colour in her life. It is difficult for her to be not pulled into the flesh trade and trafficking.”

Blair said: “Governments have a role to play in ensuring sufficient resources and priority is given to these most vulnerable members of society,”

Responding to a query on whether the widow pension schemes set up by state governments and the Centre had helped,Trust co-founder Raj Loomba said,“All I know is that we support 3,000 widows and children in Delhi, and not one of them gets any pension whatsoever.”
