Plasma Therapy
It is mainly used in treating tendinitis, which tends to heal slowly, and for torn muscles and ligaments. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy enhances tissue recovery and hastens the healing process. About 30-60 ml of the athletes blood is drawn and centrifuged to separate the PRP from the other components. The PRP is then injected into the exact location, and the growth factors that the platelets secrete, help to spur tissue recovery. Golfer Tiger Woods and former 100m record holder Donovan Bailey are among sportsmen to be treated with PRP.
Oxygen Therapy
In terms of healing sports injuries,to put it very simply, increasing the levels of oxygen in the blood help to promote healing in and around the area that is damaged. Athletes are put through an astronaut-like training programme, where they are made to breathe through a mask whilst inside a pressurised chambersimilar to the ones used while diving or snorkelling. It was famously by Wayne Rooney prior to the 2006 FIFA World Cup in an attempt to recover from a last minute injury, and by former England opener Marcus Trescothick.
Altitude Simulator
The high altitude simulation program is a way to increase fitness, enhance the rehabilitation process, and hasten the period of injury recovery. The process is carried out inside a hypoxic tent, which simulates high altitudes by maintaining a lower oxygen concentration. Widely used by athletes around the word for rehabilitation and hastening recovery periods. Importantly,it is also completely drug-free. Some athletes are even said to be considering converting their bedrooms into an altitude simulating tent.
