A day at ramlila

A well managed security chain runs around the stage on which civil rights activist Anna Hazare is sitting at Ramlila Maidan.

Security volunteers

A well managed security chain runs around the stage on which civil rights activist Anna Hazare is sitting at Ramlila Maidan. These men and women guarding Hazare and managing the crowd near the stage are not from any of the security forces — they are volunteers of India Against Corruption.

Police personnel, meanwhile, are keeping a watch from a distance. Police said they do not have any intelligence input regarding threat to Hazare and they extend security cover as and when required.

“He is not on the list of people entitled to security cover from the government, but if there is any need,we provide police personnel around the stage,” said Sudhir Yadav,Joint Commissioner of Police (Northern Range).

Anna’s health normal

Doctors said Hazare’s vitals remained normal on the sixth day of his fast. While Anna’s condition is being monitored round the clock by a team of specialists from Madanta Medicity,a medical aid counter has been set up by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) next to the stage to cater to other protesters at the venue.

Dr R R Kasliwal,a senior doctor monitoring Hazare, said the activist was doing absolutely fine despite having consumed only water for the past six days. “We are checking his blood pressure 5 to 6 times a day. Routine blood tests have also been done and everything seems to be normal. Anna has lost about 3.5 kg weight,” he said.

Heat gets to supporters

Many of Hazare’s supporters were hospitalised on Sunday due to dehydration. According to Dr Vipin Mittal, one of the doctors at the IMA camp,“We have treated about 1,576 people since we started maintaining records from Saturday afternoon. Lots of people are reporting headaches, dizziness, nausea and general dehydration. These are symptoms of heatstroke — we don’t know if they were fasting.”
