A Bright Light

Gaurav Raina of Medieval Punditz recalls playing with the late Asheem Chakravarty of Indian Ocean

Midival Punditz have been collaborating with Indian Ocean for the past couple of years and we’ve played together in concerts many times. I hope they carry on the legacy of Asheem’s music (who founded the band with (Sushmit Sen) and continue performing,so that Asheem lives in their music. When you have spent so much time making music together,it’s hard for the band to let go and get back to work. If something like this happens to Midival Punditz,I don’t know what I would do.

Indian Ocean has been a part of our collective memory as aspiring musicians. I heard them for the first time when I was in DAV College of Architecture and I still remember thinking how beautiful, yet simple and honest Asheem’s performance was. He sang from the heart. That’s when a singer is actually convincing, and that’s what I found inspiring about him. Asheem started exploring folk music in a big way before most of us were even in the music scene. He could play the tabla and a range of percussion instruments and sing simultaneously. All this without any formal training. Asheem’s success came after a lot of struggle because Indian Ocean started out when Indian rock was at such a nascent stage. The legacy he has left behind will help future generations of Indian rock musicians. We will always love you Asheem. Rest in peace.
