7 killed as wall collapses in Southeast Delhi’s Jaitpur amid heavy rain

The incident took place in Hari Nagar village on Saturday morning. Two children are among the dead

Two children were among seven killed after a wall of a building collapsed onto several jhuggis in Southeast Delhi’s Hari Nagar village, in Jaitpur, after heavy rainfall on Saturday.

One person sustained injuries.

According to police, they received a PCR call regarding the incident at 9.15 am. Local police personnel were the first to respond to the scene and pulled out eight people from the debris, police said.

“Local police responded to the collapse by 9.20-9.22 am and made arrangements for earthmover machines to remove the debris and rescue people. Eight people were pulled out from the debris and rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and the Safdarjung Trauma Centre. Of the eight, four were men, two women, and two children,” said DCP (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari.

The seven dead have been identified as Baby Ruksana (7), Baby Hasina (7), Ravibul (27), Rubina (25), Safiqul (27), Muttus (50), and Doli (28). Hasibul (25) has been identified as the sole survivor and is currently being treated in Safdarjung Hospital, said police.

“There is an old temple here (in Hari Nagar) beside which there are some jhuggis where kabadiwalas live. Since it rained all night yesterday, there was some waterlogging in the area, which caused the wall to weaken and fall on the shacks… After the rescue operations, we have evacuated the rest of the jhuggi area and have ensured no one else is stuck under the debris,” said Additional DCP (Southeast) Aishwarya Sharma.

On July 29, a woman and her son died while two others were critically injured after a decades-old boundary wall collapsed on them in North Delhi’s Civil Lines, near the Lieutenant Governor’s house, following heavy rain.

The deceased were identified as Meera (40) and her son Ganpat (17). Meera’s elder son, Dashrath (19), and her brother-in-law, Nanhe (35), were critically injured.

All of them hail from Madhya Pradesh and were working as labourers at a construction site in Sehgal Colony, police said.

On July 12, seven members of a family were killed after a four-storey building collapsed in Janta Colony, near Idgah Road in Welcome area, of Northeast Delhi. A two-year-old girl was among the six victims.

Police had said that residents were sleeping inside the building when three floors collapsed.
