Gupta’s neighbours,who lived on the first-floor of the building,also said they had sensed something amiss when they did not see Gupta leave for his walk that morning. Neighbour Nawal Kishore (63) said,“Ram Avatar had been living at the I-92 residence since 1949. His wife died 11 years ago and he was living alone ever since.”

He said two persons had come to the residence at 7.30 am,and returned when nobody answered the doorbell.

A senior police officer said,“Cash and jewellery are missing, but the case is still being investigated. There is a possibility that the accused may have killed Ram Avatar and fled in his car. They must have abandoned the car near the dairy because it was a deserted spot.”

Though it is mandatory for the police to register every senior citizen,Gupta’s name could only be found in the Ashok Vihar Senior Citizen Association files.
