The widening of Kishanganj road under bridge (RUB),which was to be completed two years ago,is expected to begin soon. The North corporation Standing Committee has agreed to the demands of residents and relocate five temples in the area under the bridge. The widening of the bridge had been held up because the corporation did not have vacant land available to relocate the temples.
The five temples to be relocated are Shri Satguru Swami Bhanu Ram Guru Darbar Mandir, near Azad Market Chowk; Peepal Mahadev Temple,a small temple near Peepal Mahadev,Sai Vasan Shah Mandir and Hanuman Mandir. The road widening work started in 2008.
The steel RUB at Kishanganj is being widened by the North Municipal Corporation. The scheme was approved by the technical committee of Delhi Development Authority. Accordingly, the corporation started the widening work to reduce traffic snarls in the area.
Within the right of way where the RUB is to be extended, there were shops of the Land and Development office, which were shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, but five temples on municipal land could not be demolished due to protests by the residents. Without shifting these structures, the proposed project could not be taken up and it had been getting delayed, resulting in cost escalation and traffic jams. The representatives of these religious structures demanded that the temples be rehabilitated in the vicinity and land equal to their area be provided to them, a senior official said.
The issue was taken to the Religious Committee,Delhi. A meeting was convened by Principal Secretary (Home) in January.
Officials suggested that the matter be amicably settled by North corporation in consultation with local leaders and occupants, the official said.
During inspection,it was suggested that these religious structures be rehabilitated under the grade separator because vacant land is not available in the vicinity, the official said.
