5 held for Shalimar Bagh robbery

Five persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a burglary at the branch office of a Kerala-based finance company in Shalimar Bagh area.

Five persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a burglary at the branch office of a Kerala-based finance company in Shalimar Bagh area. The robbers had made off with of 11.4 kg gold and Rs 2.3 lakh in cash in January 29 this year.

Police officials claimed one of the accused,Santosh (23),a Delhi University graduate,was an employee at the company from December 2007 till June 2008 and had been sacked on charges of misappropriation of funds and ornaments.

He allegedly conspired with his accomplices to rob Manappuram Finance Company in Shalimar Bagh as an act of vengeance.

The others arrested are Mintu (23),Harish (26),Shankar Das (28) and Mithai Munni Lal,a Jaunpur-based goldsmith who allegedly received the robbed gold. Delhi Police Chief Y S Dadwal said,“The arrests were made on September 9 in Shalimar Bagh. Two of the accused,however,managed to flee when they encountered the police patrolling party.”

The police have recovered cash worth Rs 8.69 lakh,342.2 grams of gold worth Rs 5.22 lakh,valuables worth Rs 3.81 lakh and property documents worth Rs 35.81 lakh.

“Santosh wanted to take revenge. During his period of employment,he came to know about the company’s business transactions and stored gold ornaments and planned the robbery,” Dadwal added.
