The Delhi Police is making high-level security arrangements, similar to the level of President Pratibha Patil, for British Prime Minister David Cameron, who will visit Delhi this Thursday to inspect one of the stadiums prepared for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Senior Delhi Police officers said there will be a three-layered ground-to-air security arrangement for the British PM from the airport to his hotel and from the hotel to places he is going to visit. Officials said Cameron would probably be taken to the National Stadium, which is ready.

Last year,US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also provided presidential-level security when she visited Delhi.

Officials said the hotel where Cameron will be staying will be turned into a fortress. A team will be arriving early from England to check the hotel and the security arrangements. While officials have not disclosed the name of the hotel Cameron is going to stay due to security reasons, sources said Cameron will be staying at the Maurya Sheraton.

Sources said more than 1,000 security personnel will be deployed at the hotel, along the routes Cameron will travel and the venues he will be visiting to attend programmes.

Apart from a Delhi Police security unit, police personnel will be placed at strategic locations and National Security Guard commandos will be stationed at the hotel and important buildings along the routes, said officials. The Traffic Police will be clearing his routes and there will be a few traffic diversions in place during the visit, officials said.

Cameron will be escorted by vehicles of the Delhi Police, apart from his personal security officials, and an ambulance. Officials deployed for his personal security will check the entire area before his visit.

The floor of the hotel where Cameron will be staying will be vacated and dog and bomb disposal squads will be checking the hotel Wednesday onwards. Anti-sabotage teams will begin their work in the New Delhi zone and the hotel.

Intelligence Bureau officials will be working in close coordination with the Special Branch and the Special Cell of the Delhi Police to gather information on any criminal activity or terrorist movement, sources said.
