The Special Cell of the Delhi Police busted a gun-smuggling gang and arrested three Aligarh residents. Eighteen pistols were recovered from them.
The three arrested were identified as Robin Singh (25), Dharmender Singh (25) and Inderjeet (22).
DCP (Special Cell) Rajiv Ranjan said the pistols were recovered from a cavity behind the door of the SUV in which they were travelling.
According to police, on Wednesday, they received information that Robin Singh would be coming to the capital to deliver firearms to his associates here.
“We formed teams and laid a trap on Nallah road near New Ashok Nagar Metro station. We spotted Robin Singh and the other two in a Bolero and signalled them to stop. But they tried to flee. Our team overpowered them. We searched the car and found eighteen 7.65 calibre pistols in a cavity in the vehicle’s door,” Ranjan said.
Police said the pistols had been manufactured in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh. Police said there has been a recent surge in demand for pistols made there. Earlier, Munger in Bihar was the hub of illegal arms manufacturing. However, with police and other agencies keeping a tight watch on Munger, the trade has shifted to Khargone, police said.
Singh reportedly told police that in the past two years, he procured over 250 weapons from Khargone and supplied it to people in Delhi and the NCR.
