23 traders denied bail for selling phones without identity numbers

A city court on Tuesday dismissed the bail plea of 23 traders arrested from Gaffar Market on the charges of selling Chinese made mobile handsets without unique identity numbers.

A city court on Tuesday dismissed the bail plea of 23 traders arrested from Gaffar Market on the charges of selling Chinese made mobile handsets without unique identity numbers.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ajay Pandey,in his order, said,“There is sufficient evidence against the accused to presume that they were involved in the offence of cheating,as well as forgery for cloning of the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number on mobile phones.”

The court also pointed out that the IMEI inscribe on the recovered handsets was not allotted by the GSM Association, which alone has the authority to do so.

Ramesh Gupta, who was representing the accused said, that the Indian Cellular Association complaint was “filed at the behest of the mobile companies whose businesses have been hit because of low cost Chinese made mobile handsets flooding the market.”

The traders were arrested last week, after the court directed the police to register an FIR.
