A Delhi court has granted 10-day interim bail to Jamia Millia Islamia student Meeran Haider, arrested in connection with the “larger conspiracy case” related to the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, owing to the death of his sister’s premature child.

Haider had sought bail on humanitarian grounds stating that his sister was left without support from other family members as her husband works in the UAE. According to Haider, he had been in continuous custody since April 2020 and had never sought interim bail earlier.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai on Saturday imposed the following conditions on Haider while granting him bail — he will not be allowed to meet the general public, he will not get in touch with witnesses or tamper with any evidence, and he will not give interviews to any media channels.

While he has been granted interim relief for 10 days, his regular bail plea is currently pending before the Delhi High Court.

According to the Delhi Police, Haider was a key member of the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) which played a significant role in organising protests against the CAA-NRC at various places in February before the riots broke out.
