A suspected Indian Mujahideen operative was on Thursday permitted by a Delhi court to file his nomination papers for the MCD elections. Zia-ur-Rehman,who wants to be a councillor,is facing trial for his alleged role in the 2008 serial blasts in Delhi and is currently lodged at the Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad.

Additional Sessions Judge Narinder Kumar granted Zia permission to file his nomination papers through the Sabarmati Jail superintendent after the state public prosecutor raised no objection.

On Wednesday,Zias counsel had sought permission for his client to file nomination papers for the MCD elections from ward number 205,Zakir Nagar. He argued that Zias candidature did not suffer from any disqualification under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

Zia and 12 others are facing trial in five different cases registered against them in connection with the serial blasts that killed 35 people and injured 135 in Delhi on September 13,2008. According to the chargesheet,Zia and Mohammed Sajid Bada were responsible for planting a bomb at Central Park,Connaught Place. The bomb did not go off and was recovered by police.
